Stuck in the Sky

Captain Gaudron’s aerial display team soon went on to appear in showgrounds in other towns and cities – me included. It was so exciting to travel there and back on steam trains.

My parents had come to know Captain Gaudron well and trusted that he would take good care of me. They asked just one thing on the days when I was far from home. I had to send them a telegram to say I was safe just as soon as my jump was done.

One breezy day I was in a town that was new to me. I felt relaxed, as I’d already found out where the nearest telegraph office was and arranged for someone to go there for me later. I strolled around the waiting crowd, saying hello, shaking hands, being treated like royalty.

“Hello, miss!” a cheeky-faced boy called out. “Why are you wearing such funny trousers?”

“Shush!” his shocked mother said.

“It’s fine,” I said with a smile. “This is my aeronaut uniform.”

I wasn’t surprised the boy was curious. There were lots of girls and women at the showground, but none dressed like me. Captain Gaudron had arranged for me to have a special outfit, like the other team members – a navy-blue suit and hat with gold buttons and trim. But instead of a skirt I wore a type of baggy trousers that gathered tight below my knees. They were SO comfortable compared to a heavy long skirt. But they were SO shocking for a girl to wear, because they weren’t a skirt!
